4 demos, 4 designs

What I’ve been up to lately.

0905 Posters

Preview of four poster and postcard designs largely inspired by the work of Otl Aicher and those old Pelican book cover designs from the 1960s.

And on the Flowplayer you’ll see the latest addition – four audio demos set to some cool animations I ripped from a few DVDs. The demos are all WIP loops with the exception of the fourth track but none are really serious efforts, just a collation of ideas and experiments over the last few years.

Track 1: “Whirly Bird”
Based on a sample of Count Basie’s jazz track of the same name. Just a simple old-skool piano house theme. Visuals are from Halas & Bachelor animation ‘The Magic Canvas’.

Track 2: “Supagirl (Riddim)”
Inspired by numerous R&B and hip-hop tracks from recent years, the most obvious being Missy’s ‘Pass That Dutch’ I suppose although worth noting that whereas that track’s bassline is the same note played three times in succession here I’ve opted for four. Stuck an extract of an acapella track that I thought suited it well so you get the idea. Visuals include extracts from Psy-Op’s “Popcorn”.

Track 3: “Total Recall”
Dubstep-influenced attempt, heavy on atmospherics and a sorrowful tone reminiscent of Burial. An OTT pastiche really but some potential. Visuals: Halas & Bachelor ‘The Figurehead’

Track 4: “Theme From SUAD”
SUAD being Shut Up & Dance, a raucous and ridiculous tribute to their old sound plus the much more recent Baltimore breaks-inspired ‘Frankenhouse’ stuff. Samples of Minnie Riperton, Fleetwood Mac and Harry James All Stars in there. Visuals: Halas & Bachelor ‘Hoffnung Symphony Orchestra’.

PieChArt 01

PieChArt 01

Just a little idea I had on Friday afternoon. An experiment in colour coding more than anything else. In no vertical column should the same colour appear more than once as a ‘majority’ and no two colour combination should appear more than once (EXCEPT with their majority-minority roles reversed). THIRDLY no colour should appear in a chart directly below a chart featuring the same colour. Make sense? Well it took bloody ages to make it work in the end! But fun.

Infographic Sechsmuzik

An excuse to try Illustrator’s pie chart maker for the first time (shocking I know), and do something with flags (thanks Wikipedia) but here’s a breakdown of the nationalities of my 100 most listened to artists on my last.fm:

Nationalities of 100 most listened to artists on my last.fm

except I’ve got the numbers wrong and there’s only 97 artists accounted for somehow (not including my own mixes listed under base58.com which leads artists chart by massive distance). Oh well…

nations i want to listen to more artists from:

1. Italy
2. Jamaica
3. Japan
4. Nigeria
5. India
6. Finland
7. Cuba
8. Croatia
9. Brazil
10. Russia
